A homemade version of the beloved Asian dish featuring crispy chicken in a sweet, savory, and slightly spicy sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece ginger, grated
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • Green onions, chopped for garnish

Instructions

  1. Coat the chicken: In a bowl, toss chicken pieces with cornstarch until well coated.
  2. Heat the oil: In a large pan, heat oil over medium-high heat.
  3. Cook the chicken: Add chicken to the pan and cook until golden brown and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  4. Sauté aromatics: In the same pan, add garlic and ginger; sauté for 1 minute until fragrant.
  5. Prepare the sauce: In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, chicken broth, sugar, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes.
  6. Simmer the sauce: Pour sauce into the pan and bring to a simmer.
  7. Combine chicken and sauce: Add cooked chicken back to the pan, stirring to coat.
  8. Final cook: Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  9. Garnish and serve: Garnish with chopped green onions and serve hot.

Notes

Serve with steamed rice or noodles. You can tweak the spiciness by adjusting the amount of red pepper flakes.
